"Kristi Noem 'Tech Blunder' While at DHS May 'Take Years to Fix' — As Department Was Unable to Use Wiretaps for Months Following 'Inadvertent' Decision -" Google Search

She didn't flip the switch yourself so you can't say that she's personally at fault but she probably didn't know enough to know that it might make such a big difference. so then you have to ask was she the right person for the job and who chose her for the job and did Trump make bad decision  based on cronyism  ? probably

Let's face it, a lot of decisions for positions of leadership in the White House administration are based on cronyism and you need that loyalty of course because previously Trump would assign people that became disloyal or were never actually loyal, but at the same time you want to have loyal people who have the technical knowledge about the job as well.

An inadvertent change to an internet provider by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) in April 2025 disrupted ICE's wiretap capabilities for months and may take years to fully fix.

Key Details of the Blunder

- The Cause: In April 2025, three months after former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem took office, HSI inadvertently changed its internet provider.
- The Technical Impact: The switch assigned the agency a new internet address, forcing them to sever and rebuild connections with roughly 50 telecommunications providers.
- Operational Fallout: The disruption resulted in months of downtime for authorized wiretaps, coinciding with an 80% collapse in wiretap usage reported by DHS investigators during Noem’s tenure.
- Recovery Timeline: Internal procurement and law enforcement assessments indicate that fully restoring and recovering from the network architecture failure could take years.

Broader Context

- Tenure and Ouster: Noem served as DHS Secretary from January 2025 until March 2026, when she was removed by President Donald Trump following controversies that included a $220 million advertising campaign and aggressive enforcement operations in Minnesota.
- Subsequent Claims: Following her departure, Noem alleged that DHS staff had secretly installed spyware on her government-issued devices, a claim she stated was uncovered with assistance from Elon Musk's team.
