The dog seemed to sense there was something on the other side of the door, and there was, but the handler didn't bother just peeking through the door where the guy with the gun was standing, apparently.
Although for that matter, if the bad guy with the gun (Cole) was just about ready to come thru the door and had his finger on the trigger, the guy with the dog might have been a dead duck- so for his own personal sake he might have gotten lucky
