📖 "Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everyone." — Romans 12:17

Former FBI Director James Comey was indicted on September 25, 2025, by a federal grand jury in the Eastern District of Virginia, charged with two felony counts: making false statements (18 U.S.C. § 1001) and obstruction of a Congressional proceeding (18 U.S.C. § 1505).

The indictment centers on Comey's September 30, 2020, testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, where he denied authorizing internal leaks to the media about the FBI's investigations into Russian interference in the 2016 election and Hillary Clinton's email practices. Prosecutors allege that statement was false.

Initially, prosecutors considered three counts of false statements, but the grand jury returned two.

Comey has denied wrongdoing. In a video statement following the indictment, he said: "My heart is broken for the Department of Justice, but I have great confidence in the federal judicial system, and I am innocent … let's have a trial, and keep the faith."

The charges were presented to the grand jury by Lindsey Halligan, the U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. Reports note that a previous U.S. attorney had declined to move forward earlier, but the case was later re-evaluated and advanced.

Comey is represented by Patrick Fitzgerald, a former U.S. attorney known for high-profile prosecutions. His arraignment is scheduled for October 9, before Judge Michael S. Nachmanoff.

The Department of Justice and FBI leadership both issued statements emphasizing that an indictment is merely an allegation and that Comey, like any defendant, is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
